Steve Turner inspires children to both read and write poetry by reading to them from his five best-selling collections. Steve started writing poetry when he was sixteen and had published four books for adults before launching The Day I Fell down the Toilet in 1996.
Through his work in schools and his experience of being a father Steve Turner has been fascinated by children’s curiosity and how sometimes quirky questions can be quite serious. In response to this Steve Turner wrote I was only Asking. In this collection he addresses some of Life’s Big Questions (e.g.Who am I? Where do I come from?).
His poetry books are often based on a theme. Dad You’re Not Funny is based on his memories of growing up and The Moon has got his Pants on is based on the twenty four hours of the day.
His poems have appeared in numerous anthologies including Essential poems for Children (edited by Daisy Goodwin), Sensation (edited by Roger McGough), The Oxford Book of Children’s Poetry and the Usborne Book of Children’s Poetry as well as being read on Radio 2, Radio 5 and the Disney Channel. Steve has performed his work in many Schools, book shops, churches, and even rock clubs.
His work for children has received critical acclaim and he has recorded three of his books for BBC AUDIO.
“Teacher and pupils felt inspired by Steve’s poetry. Their imaginations were captured and a lot of good poetry has emerged in subsequent lessons. A wonderful enjoyable day in our Book Week.”
Archdeacon Cambridge, March 2007
Steve Says “I don’t like to tell the children how to write poems. Instead I like to read my work, explain how I came to write each poem and then invite questions. I hope that the children will be inspired and maybe some of my examples will help them with their own work.”
