Lennox Carty

Lennox Carty is an internationally acclaimed dub poet. He came to Britain from Anguilla in 1963, and started writing Poetry at secondary school. He began writing more seriously in 1982 after the Brixton riots, and won the W.H.Smith Young Writers Award in1987. In 1988 he was the Farrago Slam Champion. He is a trained youth worker who conducts creative writing projects and cultural awareness projects.

In his own words

“Much of my poetry stems from growing up in Britain in the late 1960’s and 70’s. I went to the West Indies at the age of 13 but returned to Britain in 1978. My work now covers a range of issues such as Slavery, Environment, Bullying, Respect, Disrespect, Pollution, Litter, Young People and the Dangers of Drugs, Nature, War, Black History, Racism and Politics.”

He has performed on television and radio and has worked with international poets such as Loise Bennette, John Agard, Merle Collins, Benjamin Zephaniah, Linton Kwesi Johnston and the British poet Roger McGough.

Poem for the Queen: To celebrate the Queen’s 80th birthday pupils from Thatcham Park Primary School, Slough Grammar School and Bracknell and Wokingham College joined performance poet Lennox Carty to create a poem for Her Majesty.

Working in Schools and Colleges

Lennox has run Creative writing workshops in universities, junior and secondary schools. He has been ‘Poet in Residence’ in several schools throughout London, Wiltshire and Buckinghamshire. Lennox has also works with Youth clubs and teenage library reading groups.

He has also published ‘Making Time to Chat a Rhyme’ (2003) and CD and poster ‘Surviving’
