Bernard is a guitar playing poet and has been writing poems and ‘songs’ since his early teens i.e. for ages! These days it’s still what he loves to do but now he does it for a living. So he considers himself to be a very lucky man indeed.
Performances have been given in a variety of settings (from prisons to pubs, leisure centres to libraries, as well as colleges, schools, playgroups and supermarkets!). He has performed at many literary festivals including
His poems feature in numerous anthologies of poetry for young readers (including The Works, The Poetry Store, Wizard Poems, Pet Poems, Family Poems, Space Poems, Spectacular Schools, How To Survive School, The Secret Life of Pants!) and have been broadcast on local and national radio and on BBC’s The One Show..
Bernard offers:
Performances for all ages lasting 30–40 minutes – mostly KS1, 2, 3 and family sessions. These can be for the whole school or smaller groups.
Plenty of audience participation. (Guitar playing included at no extra cost!).
Workshops for all ages. I fit in with the school’s requirements. In some schools I spend a day with one class & in others visit as many classrooms as required. Usually I give writing ideas/models while we’re all together so that teachers & pupils can begin work as soon as they’re back in the classroom.
A visit often ends with us all back together to hear the new poems.
Publications include…
Wanted Alive (Hands Up Books) – Discover who is Wanted Alive. Find out what The Magnificent Malone has been getting up to and just who’s got The Giggles. Become a pupil at The School for Daydreamers. Bernard often attends The School for Daydreamers and is also a frequent visitor to ‘normal’ schools. Some of those visits inspired some of these poems.
Brilliant (Kingston Press) – You’ll find poems about behaving brilliantly. And behaving badly! Poems about chocolate, robots and aliens. (Not to mention Great-Grandmother’s false teeth!). Find out what happens if you tease your sister. Discover who’s got green fingers. And is the referee the man to be? He thinks so.
Feedback! (What teachers & pupils have said after Bernard’s been)
We’ve never produced such a variety of high quality poems before. Thank you.
Mrs Farey, Headteacher Roos Primary,
Thank you so much for such an enjoyable and entertaining day. I am sure you appreciated just how much the children gained from your visit but I just want to emphasise the value of your day. We could not normally produce such high quality writing so rapidly and painlessly.
