Checklist: On the Day

  • Ensure someone is there to welcome the writer when they arrive.
  • Remember they might have had a long journey.  Show them where the toilets are and make them a drink.  They will also need water during the day while they are speaking.

  • If you change arrangements for the day, discuss them with the writer when they arrive.
  • If the writer will be moving to different rooms during the day, make sure that they have someone to show them the way.

  • Timetable some appropriate breaks for the writer to visit the toilet and have a cup of tea.
  • Provide lunch if they are on a day-long visit.
  • Think about how you will introduce the writer if you are having an assembly Read their author profile which has lists of their books as well as a short biography.
  • Ensure that sufficient staff are present for assemblies and workshops. Even though all our writers are CRB checked, please don’t leave them alone with pupils.
  • Marking books during sessions sends out the wrong message to the pupils.    If the staff join in with activities, the pupils are more likely to be engaged too.
